Hockey Jersey Sizing Guide

Practical buying guidance for hockey teams, clubs and apparel brands.

Key takeaways

  • Use one measurement unit throughout the roster.
  • Compare a jersey that already fits over the player’s equipment.
  • Record garment measurements separately from body measurements.
  • Check movement as well as standing fit.

Start with a known fitting jersey

Lay a suitable jersey flat without stretching it. Record how each measurement was taken. A flat chest width is not the same number as a chest circumference; never mix the two in a quotation. If the reference garment has stretch or a different cut, explain that too.

Check the supplier’s measurement diagram

Ask which points define chest width, body length and sleeve length. Sleeve measurement may start at the shoulder seam or the centre back neck; those numbers are not interchangeable. Match the method before comparing values. Request the relevant chart and stated measurement tolerance for the proposed style.

Confirm fit while equipped

Have the player wear the intended shoulder and elbow equipment and assess reach, torso movement, sleeve position and coverage. Avoid choosing size only from a front-facing photograph. If two options seem plausible, compare the actual dimensions or request an appropriate fit sample rather than guessing.

Buyer checklist

Measurement How to record it Avoid
Chest width Flat seam-to-seam width at the agreed point Confusing width with circumference
Body length Agreed neckline point to hem Using a different start point
Sleeve length State the full measurement path Comparing two different methods
Cut Player or goalie; youth or adult Using a size label alone

Common mistakes

  • Choosing every jersey from everyday clothing sizes.
  • Assuming all brands use the same size labels.
  • Adding a fixed size increase for every goalie.

Questions before you start

Is there a universal hockey jersey size chart?

No. Patterns and measurement methods differ. Use the chart for the exact style being ordered.

Should I send body or garment measurements?

Identify which you are sending. A measured fitting jersey is useful, but it must use the same measurement points as the proposed chart.

Can I use height alone?

Height misses torso dimensions, equipment bulk and preferred fit. It is supporting information, not the whole specification.

What if a player changes pads?

Recheck fit with the equipment that will be used for the season.

Should spare jerseys be included?

Yes, if the team wants spares. Record them as deliberate sizes and quantities rather than an unexplained total.
